Dose of glamour: Documentary Now! takes on Grey Gardens

Who knew Bill Hader would make such a great Little Edie?
The new mockumentary series Documentary Now!, created by Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Seth Meyers, premiered with a hilarious “Sandy Passage” episode based on the classic doc. If you haven’t seen Grey Gardens yet, it’s a faded delight: a peek into the once-fabulous lives of socialites Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale (relatives of Jackie O), rattling around in their crumbling, cat-filled Hamptons mansion. Created by Albert and David Maysles, it was a groundbreaking documentary in 1976, a new introduction to direct cinema (observing real people and allowing them to tell their own stories).
Eerily glamorous, quirky and imaginative, both Edies are a creepy delight, particularly little Edie with her creative jeweled head wraps and constant, shameless hamming for the camera…. Bill Hader captures her shockingly well as “little Vivvy”! Not to be outdone, Armisen perfectly portrays the off kilter, hollow charm of the also- bizarre big Edie/Vivvy, complete with floppy hats and high off key singing.
An absolute must watch, check out Documentary Now! on IFC! The full episode is currently available on their site here.

Upgrade your beauty sleep with silk

What are you sleeping on? Nevermind thread count, what’s the fabric content?
If you’re on anything cotton or polyester, one small change could help you wake up looking more fabulous: sleeping on silk.
After hearing from my stylist that my long hair was thin at the ends (like it had been stretched), I started thinking about treating my hair more delicately- like a fabulous , expensive wig or extensions. I don’t squeeze out the water as I used to now(in one motion from root to tip, literally stretching it in a way I hadn’t considered)… don’t comb it when wet anymore.
But one little change that made a huge difference- switching to a silk satin pillowcase. Specifically, 100% long strand mulberry silk in a satin charmeuse weave is best. Literally the next day, i was surprised to see a notable difference in my newly glowing, smooth skin and glossy hair!
The science behind the glamour: silk is a breathable, hypoallergenic material- and the long stand mulberry silk is the smoothest possible surface. Hair and skin don’t catch, but glide along it. It is also less drying than cotton, and will help with frizzy hair or dry skin- there are even claims that sleeping on it prevents wrinkles.
If you aren’t already sleeping on silk, this is a new must-have for your beauty regimen. I’m sure there are lots of fab products out there, here’s one I have tried from Alaska Bear, which I loooooove (and so do amazon’s reviewers):

Is Your Hair Parting Making You Unlikeable? Hair Part Theory: Part 1

Did you ever notice that Superman’s hair parting changes in his transformation? Superman’s hair is parted on his left as he gallantly soars through the air as a superhero, parted on the right as wimpy Clark Kent.

The Hair Part Theory, created by siblings John and Catherine Walter, states that hair parting draws attention to that hemisphere’s brain processes: a left parting indicating logic, verbal acuity, and generally masculine qualities, while a right parting evokes right hemisphere processes like the visual, artistic, and musical skills typically attributed to the feminine.

Basically, this breaks down to cultural perception, and that a man with his hair parted on the left will appear more masculine, while parting on the right makes men seem less likeable- possibly more nerdy, sensitive, or ineffective (famous left parters: Tom Cruise, Steve Martin, Bill Clinton).  Conversely, women typically part hair on the right, and those parting on the left appear more masculine, dominant, or powerful(examples: Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Hillary Clinton- although Hillary has flipped in recent campaign ads!). Middle parted hair, or hair in styles without parts, are more neutral… could a change in hair parting make a big difference in the way the world views and treats you?

From personal experience, as a female… well, yes, it really seems to make a difference. Having always parted my hair on the left, I switched to the right last year after hearing about this study. Perhaps it was placebo, but… interactions improved. People smile at me more, it’s like I am suddenly more charming. Who wouldn’t want to feel a little more attractive, to get along a little easier? If you’ve been parting on the “wrong” side, switch it up! Let us know the results.

Scroll on for the proof: Celebrities known to part their hair the “wrong” way. Although these people are clearly successful (and some may vary their hair parting on occasion), many have had publicity problems or issues with public perception…

Dose of Glamour: The Zoolander & Dior Connection

A new teaser trailer for Zoolander 2 has been released, and after watching it, had to go back and rewatch the original…   Still glamorous, fabulous and crammed full of celebrity roles and cameos, Zoolander is such a fab film! From David Bowie to Mila Jovovich, Tyson Beckford to Alexander Skarsgard, there are an amazing number of famous models, musicians and actors in this movie. Colorful, funny, a total delight, make time to see this one again while we wait for the sequel- it absolutely holds up!

And did you realize: Mugatu seems to be based on John Galliano?

Perhaps a villain being based on the designer is less surprising after his anti-semitic fall from grace- but Galliano actually did create a homeless (And mentally ill) – inspired collection for Dior in Spring 2000:

At the time, Galliano said he was inspired by the french homeless near the Seine, photographs of mentally ill people,  the Rag Balls of the 1930s in France (where socialites would dress up as hobos), and the creepy paintings of Expressionist painter Egon Schiele. This was some heavy-handed interpretation to say the least! Looks involved newsprint-printed pants- completed with newspaper-styled trains (for the complete homeless look) and straightjacket-styled dresses, mixed in with twisted ballerinas, undone ballgowns, and empty bottles and garbage for accessories. Dirty and starving-looking models walked to Madonna’s cover of American Pie.

“Children are brought up to watch Lady and the Tramp and Charlie Chaplin and The Little Rascals. I didn’t set out to make a political statement. I’m a dressmaker. But jogging around the Seine has thrown Paris into a whole different light for me…. Some of these people are like impresarios, their coats worn over their shoulder and their hats worn at a certain angle. It’s fantasic.” –Galliano

Forever pushing boundaries, Galliano tried to walk the line with this collection, but totally crossed it! While achieving critical success, he was panned by the French media, and protests were held outside Dior’s headquarters.

In comparison, Zoolander really didn’t push the satire far AT ALL! In fact, Mugatu’s Derelicte looks were much more fabulous, a neon rockstar styling of homeless inspiration, versus many of Galliano’s (which were more sad-dirty-watercolor-creepy).

Copenhagen Fashion Week Recap!

Last week, fashionistas gathered in Copenhagen to see Sweden’s best designers presenting their newest collections.  Inventive and artistic, yet often minimal, here are some of our favorite designers (and their best looks!):

Top pick: Stacia/Lace was an absolute fabulous dream, and had the best styling of the week, with models in dreamy angelic curls and dark smoky eyes… really an inspirational look. The designs featured lace, leather & sequins in sensual shapes- there are some very chic/covetable yet totally wearable pieces here, from party dresses to slouchy coats. LOVE.

Lala Berlin was bolder in color palette, with bright Blues and yellows popping against neutrals.  Open necklines (some to the navel) and flowy shapes from simple to complex elevated prints from raw to sophisticated.

Malene Birger featured neutral tones and 90s silhouettes: mocknecks, boxy hems, tunics and wide legs with interesting details (really cool fringes!).  Some styles were a bit boxy/normcore(cropped pants are sad) but still- some great ideas!

One more quirky pick: Margarethe Skolen featured bright colors, exciting silhouettes and unexpected fun details- very fun, very fab and a bit 90’s-Benetton-feeling!

Quit Biting Your Nails the Glamorous Way

After trying acrylics, horrible tasting polish, and every other trick – the most glam and foolproof method to quit biting nails is here! Get the long, elegant, glamorous, slimming nails you’ve been dreaming of…

The secret weapon: Impress Press-on Nails by Broadway

ImPress Nails

These bad boys are a really fantastic product… superior to at-home glue on nails (the kind that last a week or two) that really tend to damage nails, as do salon acrylics (which can also look thick and unattractive when poorly applied). These fab stick ons are crazy easy to apply, come in loads of colors and prints, and last about a week. They come off with very minimal nail damage, looked like no more than peeling off nail polish. Plus, they look so real!
For three months, I wore these nails consistently, constantly! I would take them off and leave my nails bare for one night per week, just to let my nails breathe- but given the opportunity I would chew my nails between applications. Usually ended up sticking new ones on quickly, just to stop the cycle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tips to make your Impress nails last longer:
– Use nail polish remover and alcohol on your nails before applying
– Press them onto your nails frequently (for an hour or so after applying, then whenever you think of it)
– Don’t file the edges, or the plastic will start to get funky and soft
– Keep your hands dry for as long as possible after applying (putting these on right before bed is ideal)
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three months was enough to break the biting habit (and grow my nails out nicely) and I switched to using gel polish on my gorgeous and brand new natural long nails. Not a hand model… but observe the dramatic transition anyway in these un-retouched photos:
Another tip to quit biting: switch to fab nail art instead! If you truly love the way your nails look, you won’t want to bite them. Now I actually get compliments on my nails, and have fun experimenting with nail art and techniques (loose glitter has so many possibilities!) and oh, so many great ideas from Pinterest…
Tell me- Do you bite your nails?!? Have you quit, or have you tried?
P.S. This is absolutely not an advertisement or paid promotion for ImPress, I truly love the product! With one caveat: I don’t recommend the newer variation that comes in red packaging. Although this line has some very cool accent nails, the nails seem shorter and wider at the tips, not very flattering. Stick to the pink package!

Glamour Fix: Drag Race & Adore Delano

Which season of RuPaul’s drag race is your favorite??

While every season is fantastic(and the show itself the most wonderful, blissful addiction), my favorite so far has been season 6. Adore Delano, Bianca Del Rio, Courteney Act, and the entire cast were so talented, lovely, and utterly inspirational. If you haven’t seen the show, if you enjoy anything glamorous, you really, really need to watch it.

Just had to draw my favorite look from last season… Adore, you are SO fabulous!
